We feel that the flexibility of the shell and other structural members have greater impact on the overall comfort of the riding experience than the pad. The SPYDERWEB shell allows us to save weight by eliminating the pad while still allowing greater overall comfort compared to most racing saddles.
The cut-outs that make up the SPYDER and SPYDER TWIN-TAIL saddles are designed to conform to the rider’s anatomy and help to evenly distribute the rider’s weight. The absence of pressure points dramatically increases overall comfort.
While the SPYDER and SPYDER TWIN-TAIL saddles surpassed standards set under well established and respected methods for testing bicycle saddles, lab testing is only able to simulate very specific riding action and thus impossible to take into account real world riding environment which have vast varieties of terrain conditions, rider ability/skill, rider anatomy, etc. Tioga therefore advise riders to replace the SPYDER and SPYDER TWIN-TAIL saddles after one full year for safe and effective operation.
The SPYDER and SPYDER TWIN-TAIL saddles are thoroughly tested for road application but the energy
absorbing characteristic of the SPYDERWEB technology can certainly be very beneficial in off-road applications.
However, because of circumstances well beyond our control such as riding conditions, rider skill, rider’s diligence
in inspecting the product, etc., suitability of SPYDER saddle in off-road applications cannot be guaranteed.
For off-road application, we recommend the D-Spyder, which utilizes a thicker Carbonite shell that is durable
enough for just about any application.
While a saddle may appear to last a long time, its effective performance lifespan is usually shorter than it seems.
A performance saddle has shock absorbing parts such as padding and plastic shell, but similar to the sole of a pair of high performance running shoes, these shock absorbing members deteriorate quickly with fatigue. To insure most effective energy absorption and optimal performance, it is generally advisable to replace any high performance saddle often, regardless of its appearance.
In the particular case of the SPYDER and SPYDER TWIN-TAIL saddles, the articulating shell is not only designed to absorb energy, but also to support the rider’s weight. To avoid any inadvertent failure of the saddle due to fatigue, Tioga especially urge users to replace it with another SPYDER saddle once a year.
Yes. The absence of cover material and pad makes the SPYDER and SPYDER TWIN-TAIL completely water (weather) proof. The padding found in traditional saddles often become hard and in some extreme cases even freeze in very cold weather rendering the saddles practically useless. The SPYDER has been successfully tested during the harsh winters of Alaska in -40F temperature with results showing virtually no effect on performance compared to tests during fair weather.
Carbonite is a proprietary blend of polyamide, reinforcing fiber and chemical additives. The state of the
art technology in the SPYDER requires equally state of the art material.
Since the SPYDER does not require any padding, it is absolutely essential that the material that make
up the SPYDERWEB shell strikes a balance between flex and rigidity. Exhaustive research was
required to find the appropriate material and only after very thorough testing did Tioga finalize on
the formula and give it the name Carbonite.
The SPYDER and SPYDER TWIN-TAIL saddles have been tested to adequately absorb shock for riders up to 190lbs. There is no weight limit for the D-Spyder saddle.
The absence of the cover and pad make the SPYDER saddles completely water proof so mostly water is all that’s needed to clean the saddle. If necessary, a mild detergent may also be used to clean the SPYDER saddle.
The effectiveness of any high performance equipment greatly depends on the care of the user. To insure safe and effective operation of the SPYDER and SPYDER TWIN-TAIL, the saddle must be thoroughly inspected periodically, making sure there are no visible cracks anywhere on the SPYDERWEB shell. This is particularly important after any crash. The saddle must be replaced if any cracks are observed.
